Intellectual Disability01:29

Intellectual Disability

Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in intellectual and adaptive functioning that manifest during the developmental period. This condition encompasses challenges in reasoning, memory, problem-solving, and learning, accompanied by impairments in everyday life skills, such as communication, self-care, and social interactions. Intellectual disability affects approximately 1% of the population in the United States, impacting an estimated 5...
Attitudes01:54

Attitudes

Attitude is our evaluation of a person, an idea, or an object. We have attitudes for many things ranging from products that we might pick up in the supermarket to people around the world to political policies. Typically, attitudes are favorable or unfavorable: positive or negative (Eagly & Chaiken, 1993). And, they have three components: an affective component (feelings), a behavioral component (the effect of the attitude on behavior), and a cognitive component (belief and knowledge;...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who are...
Intelligence01:27

Intelligence

The term "intelligence" is complex because it refers to both behavior and individuals, and its interpretation varies across cultures. European Americans tend to link intelligence with reasoning and cognitive skills, while in Kenya, it is tied to responsible participation in family and social life. In Uganda, intelligence is seen as the ability to know the right actions and carry them out effectively, while the Iatmul people of Papua New Guinea associate it with the capacity to remember detailed...
Dimensions of Health and Illness01:21

Dimensions of Health and Illness

The factors influencing the health-illness continuum can be internal or external and may or may not be under conscious control. They are related to the following eight human dimensions, and each dimension is interrelated to one other.
Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Area of Science:

  • Social Psychology
  • Disability Studies
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Public attitudes toward individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) significantly impact community integration.
  • Understanding these attitudes is crucial for effective service provision and public awareness campaigns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe public attitudes toward individuals with ID across affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions.
  • To compare attitudes based on demographics (sex, age, education, income) and contact frequency/quality.
  • To determine if the level of functioning influences attitudes.

Main Methods:

  • A phone survey using the Attitudes Toward Intellectual Disability Questionnaire (ATTID) was conducted.
  • 1605 randomly selected adults in Québec, Canada, participated.
  • The ATTID assesses attitudes through affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions.

Main Results:

  • Overall public attitudes toward individuals with ID were generally positive across all dimensions.
  • Attitudes varied by participant characteristics and contact with individuals with ID.
  • Men showed more negative attitudes regarding discomfort; women showed more negative attitudes regarding knowledge of capacity and rights. Younger and more educated participants exhibited more positive attitudes. Attitudes were more negative towards individuals with lower functioning ID.

Conclusions:

  • Findings provide valuable insights for tailoring public awareness and education initiatives.
  • Targeted interventions can address specific attitudinal dimensions and demographic groups.
  • Promoting positive attitudes is key to enhancing community integration for individuals with ID.
