Interference: Path Lengths

Consider two sources of sound, that may or may not be in phase, emitting waves at a single frequency, and consider the frequencies to be the same.
Two special sources may be considered when they are in phase. This can be easily achieved by feeding the two sources from the same source. An example would be synchronizing the two speakers by feeding them with the same source, such as the sound waves produced by a tuning fork. This setup ensures that the two sources have the same frequency and are...

Echo

The human ear cannot distinguish between two sources of sound if they happen to reach within a specific time interval, typically 0.1 seconds apart. More than this, and they are perceived as separate sources.
Imagine the sound is reflected back to the ears. Assuming that the source is very close to the human, the difference between hearing the two sounds—the emitted sound and the reflected sound—may be more than the minimum time for perceiving distinct sounds. If this is the case, then the...

Summary

Two studies on pause duration and interaural time differences (ITD) sensitivity showed differing results. This study reconciled findings by defining pause duration based on modulation depth sensitivity, improving ITD threshold agreement.

Area of Science:

  • Acoustics
  • Psychoacoustics
  • Auditory Perception

Background:

  • Previous studies investigated pause duration's effect on interaural time difference (ITD) sensitivity.
  • Discrepancies were observed in the steepness of ITD threshold functions across studies.
  • The role of pause duration metric in ITD perception requires clarification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To directly compare ITD thresholds using matched acoustic parameters.
  • To investigate the influence of different envelope flank shapes on ITD sensitivity.
  • To reconcile differing results between previous studies by examining pause duration metrics.

Main Methods:

  • Direct comparison of threshold ITDs for two envelope flank shapes.
  • Utilized matched carrier and modulation frequencies.
  • Defined pause duration based on modulation depth sensitivity.

Main Results:

  • Threshold ITDs for the two envelope flank shapes were directly compared.
  • Results showed good agreement when pause duration was defined by modulation depth sensitivity.
  • This metric resolved discrepancies observed in prior research.

Conclusions:

  • Modulation depth sensitivity provides a consistent metric for pause duration in ITD perception.
  • The findings reconcile previous conflicting results on pause duration and ITD sensitivity.
  • A unified understanding of ITD processing in relation to stimulus envelope pauses is advanced.
