Summary

Bilateral synchronous appendicular bone tumors are rare in dogs. Treatments, including radiation and surgery, offered survival times comparable to single bone tumors.

Background:

  • Bilateral synchronous appendicular bone tumors are exceptionally rare.
  • This study details four canine cases with this condition.

Observation:

  • Dogs presented with unilateral lameness; one showed contralateral limb pain.
  • Technetium-99m ((99m)Tc) scintigraphy revealed bilateral lesions in distal radii, proximal humeri, or distal tibiae.
  • Thoracic radiographs excluded pulmonary metastases.

Findings:

  • Palliative radiation therapy (with or without bisphosphonates) yielded survival times of 50, 193, and 523 days.
  • Stereotactic radiation therapy combined with limb salvage and chemotherapy resulted in a 926-day survival.
  • Treatment outcomes were similar to those for solitary appendicular bone tumors.

Implications:

  • This study expands understanding of rare bilateral bone tumors in dogs.
  • Treatment strategies for single bone tumors may be applicable to bilateral presentations.
  • Further research into the etiology and optimal management of these rare tumors is warranted.
