Summary

The first cry of newborns is not controlled by the brain. Instead, the infant larynx generates sound through aerodynamic conditions, not vocal fold vibration alone.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the biomechanical and aerodynamic processes underlying the generation of the first cry in human neonates.
  • To investigate the role of laryngeal structures in producing the initial vocalization.

Main Methods:

  • High-speed imaging and simultaneous sound recording were conducted on excised human fetal larynges (38-week term).
  • The distinct behaviors of the vocal folds and false vocal folds were analyzed.
  • Vocal fold function was examined post-resection of supraglottic structures.
  • Acoustic analysis compared the first cry sound with sounds produced by excised larynges.

Main Results:

  • The vocal folds, under the aerodynamic conditions of the first cry, do not produce sound independently.
  • Instead, they facilitate aerodynamic conditions that lead to the vibration of other laryngeal components.
  • Excised larynges produced sounds acoustically similar to the first cry.

  • The findings suggest that the first cry lacks direct neurological control of the larynx.
