This study reports a rare case of extensive new bone formation in the maxillary region following head and neck radiation therapy. This unusual ossification occurred early after treatment for squamous cell carcinoma.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Radiotherapy
Background:
- High-dose radiation therapy can negatively impact bone metabolism.
- Post-treatment bone formation after radiotherapy is typically rare.
Observation:
- A patient with squamous cell carcinoma underwent maxillary resection and orbital exenteration.
- Adjuvant radiotherapy was administered due to compromised surgical margins.
Findings:
- Four months post-radiotherapy, new bone formation was observed in the maxillary, nasal, and orbital cavities.
- Biopsies confirmed normal tissue, ruling out residual cancer or osteoradionecrosis.
Implications:
- This case presents the first documented instance of extensive early bone formation as a consequence of head and neck radiotherapy.
- Highlights an unusual biological response to radiation in bone metabolism.

Fractures: Bone Repair
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the procedure...
