Purpose of the Study:
- To prospectively evaluate the predictive role of adiponectin in the development of type 2 diabetes among participants with IFG.
- To examine potential sex-specific differences in the association between adiponectin and diabetes risk within IFG categories.
Main Methods:
- A prospective cohort study included 42,845 participants from South Korea (2004-2008), with 5,085 identified as having IFG (Stage 1: 100-109 mg/dL, Stage 2: 110-125 mg/dL).
- Diabetes incidence was followed up to December 2011.
- Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate Hazard Ratios (HRs) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs), adjusting for relevant covariates.
Main Results:
- Of 5,085 participants with IFG, 652 developed diabetes over a mean follow-up of 4.4 years.
- Low adiponectin was significantly associated with increased diabetes risk in men with Stage 2 IFG (HR: 1.78) and in women with Stage 1 (HR: 2.64) and Stage 2 IFG (HR: 2.17).
- Overall, low adiponectin was independently associated with a 82% increased risk of diabetes in Stage 2 IFG participants (HR: 1.82) after multivariable adjustment. A significant interaction by sex and Stage 1 IFG was observed (P < 0.001).
Conclusions:
- Adiponectin is an independent predictor of diabetes development in individuals with IFG.
- The predictive value of adiponectin is particularly evident in Stage 2 IFG and shows sex-specific patterns.
- Adiponectin measurement could aid in identifying individuals with IFG at higher risk for progression to diabetes.
