Computed Tomography01:10

Computed Tomography

Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiology
  • Computed Tomography

Background:

  • Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a widely used imaging modality.
  • Advancements in CBCT technology aim to improve image quality and efficiency.
  • Dual-source systems offer potential benefits over single-source systems.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance of a novel benchtop dual cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) system.
  • To compare the dual CBCT system's performance against a conventional single CBCT system.

Main Methods:

  • A dual CBCT system with two orthogonally placed tube/detector sets was developed.
  • System performance was assessed using phantoms (water, Catphan, skull) and biological samples (ham).
  • Evaluated parameters included uniformity, contrast, spatial resolution, noise power spectrum, and CT number linearity.

Main Results:

  • Dual CBCT showed a slight decrease in uniformity (1.1-1.9%) but comparable spatial resolution and CT number linearity (R² ≥ 0.99).
  • Contrast for low- and high-contrast objects was comparable or slightly improved with dual CBCT.
  • The dual CBCT system exhibited a lower noise power spectrum and produced images with good resolution and soft-tissue contrast.

Conclusions:

  • The benchtop dual CBCT system demonstrates performance comparable to single CBCT systems.
  • This dual-source approach offers a viable alternative for advanced imaging applications.
