[20 years' experience with the treatment of idiopathic membranous glomerulopathy. Retrospective study]

The authors present in a retrospective investigation experience with immunosuppressive treatment of 30 patients with idiopathic membranous glomerulopathy. Twenty-six patients suffered at the onset of the investigation from nephrotic syndrome and seven had elevated serum creatinine values. In 12 patients prednisone treatment was started. A rapid decline of proteinuria was recorded in three patients. The remaining nine patients were changed to prednisone and cyclophosphamide treatment, 18 patients had this treatment from the onset. The mean period of treatment was 18.1 +/- 7 months. At the end of the investigation which lasted on average 118 months, 21 patients (70%) have achieved complete clinical remission (proteinuria less than 0.6 g/24 h and normal serum creatinine values) and 6 patients have achieved partial clinical remission (proteinuria less than less than 2.0 g/24 h, normal serum creatinine). The authors assume that long-term immunosuppressive treatment had a favourable effect on the course of idiopathic membranous glomerulopathy.
