Summary

Phonological working memory does not appear to represent stimulus-response rules for task-set control. Once learned, these rules are likely stored in procedural working memory, not declarative phonological working memory.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if phonological working memory represents S-R rules for task-set control.
  • To examine the role of articulatory duration and phonological similarity of stimulus terms.

Main Methods:

  • Three task-cuing experiments were conducted.
  • Participants switched between two sets of arbitrary S-R rules.
  • Stimulus term properties (duration, phonological similarity) were manipulated.

Main Results:

  • Neither duration nor phonological similarity affected performance or task-switch costs after practice.
  • Phonological similarity only impacted performance during initial single-task training.
  • No detectable effects on overall performance, task-switch cost, or its reduction with preparation were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Phonological working memory plays no significant functional role in representing S-R rules for task-set control beyond a transient phase.
  • Learned S-R rules are likely represented in nonlinguistic procedural working memory.
