Abstract:
Role ambiguity and differences in role expectations increase the difficulty of implementing the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) role. The lack of standardization of role inception and role performance contribute to this problem; however, flexibility within these definitions and descriptions may ensure the success of this advanced nursing role. This article reviews features of role ambiguity of the CNS and presents a collaborative approach between nurse administrators, nurse educators, and practicing CNSs to clarify these issues.
