Summary

This case report details a chainsaw suicide in a lumberjack with a history of psychiatric pathology. Autopsy revealed extensive neck and head trauma consistent with self-inflicted chainsaw injuries.

Background:

  • A 39-year-old male with a history of psychiatric pathology and suicide attempts was found deceased.
  • The deceased was a professional lumberjack, with a chainsaw found near the body.

Observation:

  • Autopsy revealed extensive injuries confined to the head, neck, and left shoulder.
  • Major wounds were present on both sides of the neck and head, including a rupture of the atlanto-occipital joint.
  • Complete transection of the left neck structures (muscles, common carotid artery, internal jugular vein, vagus nerve) and the C5-C6 vertebrae with the spinal cord was noted.

Findings:

  • The injuries were consistent with self-inflicted trauma from a chainsaw.
  • The pattern of injuries, including abrasions on the shoulder, supported the mechanism of injury.
  • No evidence of spinal cord damage at levels above C5-C6 was observed, despite complete transection at that level.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for extreme self-harm methods, even in occupational settings.
  • Understanding the biomechanics of chainsaw injuries is crucial for forensic investigations.
  • The case underscores the importance of mental health support for individuals with a history of suicidal ideation.
