Background:

Assessing the functionality of elderly individuals is crucial for targeted interventions.
The International Classification of Functionality (ICF) provides a standardized framework for evaluating health and disability.
Understanding the specific needs and capabilities of the aging population in Portugal is essential for healthcare planning.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the functionality of elderly persons using the International Classification of Functionality (ICF).
To identify unmet needs and performance levels in daily activities among the elderly population in the Alentejo region of Portugal.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional, descriptive study involving a stratified random sample of 903 elderly persons.
Data collection via structured interviews using a questionnaire based on the ICF.
Study conducted in health centers in the Alentejo region, Portugal, with a 95% confidence level and 2.5% margin of error.

Main Results:

Significant portions of the elderly population were illiterate (30.7%) and lived alone (22.9%).
Unmet needs were reported in feeding/dietary (18.7%), housing (19.2%), and health (26.0%).
While orientation functions were largely preserved (83.4%), intense pain affected 58% and 73.3% lacked functional dentition. High performance (>80%) was observed in personal care activities like washing and toileting.

Conclusions:

Functionality generally declines with age, but most dimensions remain preserved until approximately 75 years.
Targeted support is needed for unmet health, housing, and dietary needs.
Despite challenges like pain and dental issues, basic self-care activities are maintained by a majority of elderly individuals.
