Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. Background:

  • Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a common refractive surgery.
  • Assessing its impact on binocular vision, specifically stereoacuity (SA), is crucial for patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of LASIK surgery on stereoacuity (SA).

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 200 patients undergoing LASIK.
  • SA measured preoperatively and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively using the Random Dot test.
  • Exclusion of patients with preoperative SA worse than 480 sec/arc.

Main Results:

  • Mean SA initially deteriorated one week post-LASIK but improved significantly by one and three months (P=0.002, P=0.001).
  • Overall, 32.5% of patients showed improved SA, 9.5% decreased SA, and 58% remained unchanged (P=0.007).
  • Anisometropic patients without amblyopia demonstrated potential for SA improvement.

Conclusions:

  • LASIK surgery leads to an overall improvement in mean SA.
