Background:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common psychiatric condition.
  • Biochemical markers, such as catecholamines, are investigated for diagnostic and prognostic value in GAD.
  • Previous research suggests potential alterations in neurotransmitter systems in anxiety disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate differences in plasma catecholamine levels, specifically norepinephrine, epinephrine, and free 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), between patients with generalized anxiety disorder and normal controls.
  • To assess the utility of MHPG as a potential biochemical marker for GAD.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-one patients meeting DSM-III criteria for GAD and 15 healthy controls underwent blood sampling after a 20-minute rest period.
