Germany faces a significant deficit in pain care services, with a shortage of approximately 2,500 institutions. Palliative care is also underutilized, highlighting the need for expanded pain and palliative care research and provision.

Context:

A health technology assessment (HTA) was commissioned by the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) to evaluate the state of pain care in Germany.
The study involved a comprehensive literature search of the PubMed database and an additional survey of Physicians' Health Insurance Associations.

Purpose:

To characterize the current pain care situation in Germany.
To identify gaps in pain and palliative care provision.
To assess the effectiveness of interdisciplinary approaches in pain management.

Summary:

Analysis of 12 included studies revealed a shortfall of approximately 2,500 curative pain care institutions in Germany.
Significant underutilization of both inpatient and outpatient palliative care services was observed.
