Hebephilia, a sexual preference for pubescent minors, is a disorder affecting two-thirds of a studied sample. Most cases involve mixed attractions, with significant links to child sexual abuse and distinct psychological characteristics.
Area of Science:
- Sexology
- Psychiatry
- Forensic Psychology
Background:
- Hebephilia is defined as a sexual preference for the body scheme of pubescent minors (Tanner stages 2-3).
- The classification of hebephilia as a distinct sexual disorder remains a clinical challenge.
- This study examines the prevalence and characteristics of hebephilia within a specific clinical sample.
Observation:
- The study assessed 222 males from the Prevention Project Dunkelfeld (2005-2011).
- Hebephilia was examined based on defined inclusion and exclusion criteria.
- The research focused on identifying individuals with a sexual preference for pubescent minors.
Findings:
- Approximately two-thirds (n=153) of the sample exhibited responsiveness to the pubescent body scheme.
- Of those with hebephilia, 85% presented with mixed attractions, while 15% were exclusively attracted.
- Nearly all individuals (95%) reported histories of child sexual abuse or use of child abusive imagery.
- Hebephiles displayed higher clinical/psychological stress, distinct personality traits, and more offense-supportive attitudes compared to controls.
Implications:
- Hebephilia is confirmed as a sexual disorder, though not independently coded in current diagnostic systems (DSM-IV-TR, ICD-10).
- Inclusion of hebephilia as a distinct diagnosis in DSM-5 is proposed as a significant advancement for sexology.
- Findings highlight the need for specialized diagnostic and treatment approaches for individuals with hebephilia.
