Summary

Dysplastic nevi are intermediate lesions between common moles and melanoma. While not direct precursors, their presence indicates a higher risk for developing melanoma.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Dysplastic nevi are morphologically and biologically intermediate between common acquired nevi and melanoma.
  • Debate exists regarding the definition, diagnostic criteria, and biologic significance of dysplastic nevi.
  • Initially identified in melanoma-prone families, their role in melanoma development is complex.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To clarify the definition and significance of dysplastic nevi in relation to melanoma.
  • To address the ongoing debate surrounding dysplastic nevus classification and importance.
  • To highlight the association between dysplastic nevi and melanoma risk.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature and clinical observations.
  • Histopathological analysis of nevi.

  • Epidemiological studies on melanoma risk in patients with dysplastic nevi.
  • Main Results:

    • Dysplastic nevi represent a spectrum, bridging common nevi and melanoma.
    • No universal consensus exists on the precise definition or nomenclature for these lesions.
    • Individual transformation of a dysplastic nevus to melanoma is rare.

    Conclusions:

    • Dysplastic nevi are clinically significant due to their association with increased melanoma risk.
    • Despite definitional ambiguity, dysplastic nevi warrant attention in dermatological assessment.
    • Understanding the continuum from common nevi through dysplastic nevi to melanoma is crucial for risk stratification.
