Summary

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) is effective for chronic pain.
  • MBT has not been specifically studied for Chronic Tension-Type Headache (CTH).
  • Standard MBT programs are typically 8 weeks long, but shorter interventions may be effective.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a brief MBT intervention for CTH.
  • To determine if a 6-session, 3-week MBT program can reduce CTH symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial was conducted.
  • Participants were assigned to either a brief MBT group or a wait-list control group.
  • The intervention consisted of 6 sessions over 3 weeks.

Combining Behavior and EEG to Study the Effects of Mindfulness Meditation on Episodic Memory

Published on: May 11, 2020

Main Results:

  • The MBT group showed a significant reduction in headache frequency.
  • The mindfulness facet of 'Observe' increased significantly in the MBT group.
  • No significant changes were observed in the wait-list control group.

Conclusions:

  • Brief MBT appears to be an effective intervention for CTH.
  • This pilot study provides preliminary evidence for using shorter MBT programs for headache management.
