Summary

Advanced meditation significantly increases alpha and theta brainwave activities. Theta activity, linked to attention, rises throughout meditation, while alpha activity, linked to relaxation, emerges in advanced stages.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Science
  • Psychophysiology

Background:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) studies show increased alpha and theta activities during meditation.
  • Research on EEG during advanced meditation stages remains limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate electroencephalography (EEG) characteristics during advanced meditation.
  • To explore changes in alpha and theta brainwave activities across different meditation phases.

Main Methods:

  • Recorded bilateral absolute alpha and theta EEG power in a single meditator.
  • Collected data during rest, breath meditation, and advanced meditative stages over 10 sessions.
  • Analyzed time-series data using simulation modeling to compare power across phases.

Main Results:

  • Breath meditation showed significantly increased bilateral theta activity compared to baseline, but not alpha.
  • Advanced meditation stages exhibited significantly increased bilateral alpha and theta activities compared to breath meditation.
  • Compared to baseline, advanced meditation showed significant increases in both bilateral alpha and theta activities.

Conclusions:

  • Internalized attention, reflected by theta activity, continuously enhances throughout meditation.
  • Relaxation, reflected by alpha activity, becomes significant only in advanced meditative phases.
  • EEG patterns evolve distinctly across meditation stages, highlighting distinct neural correlates for attention and relaxation.
