Physical activity enjoyment, or reward, significantly reduces adolescent smoking initiation. This study found that the positive effects of physical activity on preventing smoking were completely mediated by the reward derived from the activity.
Area of Science:
- Adolescent Health
- Behavioral Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Research indicates physical activity lowers smoking uptake, but underlying mechanisms are unclear.
- This study investigated if the reward from physical activity mediates the link between physical activity and smoking.
- Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for effective smoking prevention strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if the enjoyment derived from physical activity acts as a mechanism linking physical activity to reduced smoking.
- To explore the mediating role of physical activity reward in adolescent smoking behaviors.
Main Methods:
- Prospective longitudinal survey of 1374 adolescents over four years.
- Self-report measures of health behaviors collected every six months.
- Associative processes latent growth curve modeling was employed.
Main Results:
- Physical activity reward significantly mediated the relationship between physical activity and smoking at baseline.
- Physical activity reward also mediated the relationship between physical activity trends and smoking trends over time.
- The impact of physical activity on smoking was fully explained by the reward associated with physical activity.
Conclusions:
- This study provides the first evidence that physical activity reward is a key mechanism in reducing adolescent smoking.
- Interventions promoting physical activity and its enjoyment may effectively reduce adolescent smoking initiation and progression.
- Targeting the rewarding aspects of physical activity could be a novel approach in smoking prevention.
