Summary

Emergency laparoscopic colectomy is safe for selected patients, offering comparable postoperative outcomes to open surgery despite longer operative times. This approach does not increase costs and shows similar morbidity rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare outcomes of laparoscopic versus open colectomies for emergency colorectal conditions.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of emergency laparoscopic colectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of emergency laparoscopic colectomies.
  • Matching with patients who underwent emergency open colectomies based on key demographics and diagnosis.
  • Analysis of operative time, hospitalization duration, morbidity, and costs.

  • Laparoscopic colectomy had longer operative times (175 vs. 145 minutes) but similar hospitalization durations (6 vs. 7 days).
