Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients01:15

Drug Dosing: Geriatric Patients

Elderly individuals encompass a diverse population with varying degrees of age-related physiological changes. Defining the elderly presents challenges, as the geriatric population is often arbitrarily categorized as individuals older than 65. However, many individuals in this group lead active and healthy lives, with an increasing number surpassing 85 years and falling into the older elderly category. Physiological changes associated with aging impact performance capacity and homeostatic...

Hearing

When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Pharmacodynamics in Geriatric Patients: Effects of Age

Age-related pharmacokinetic changes are extensively documented, but understanding age-related pharmacodynamic alterations is relatively limited. This knowledge gap can be partly attributed to the complexity of developing appropriate measures of drug responses compared to bioanalytical methods for determining drug concentrations. Most information regarding age-related differences in human pharmacodynamics originates from cross-sectional studies. However, these studies assume that observed mean...

Summary

Many elderly hearing aid users still don't use them regularly, with noise and motivation being key barriers. Improving hearing aid compliance is crucial for effective hearing rehabilitation in older adults.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Gerontology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Age-related hearing loss is increasing, impacting the effectiveness of hearing rehabilitation.
  • A significant number of elderly individuals with hearing aids use them only occasionally or not at all.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate hearing aid usage rates among the elderly.
  • To identify reasons for minimal or non-use of hearing aids in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A mailed questionnaire survey was distributed to 4,067 individuals aged 70, 75, 80, and 85 in Finland.
  • The survey included questions on hearing aid use patterns and associated challenges.

Main Results:

  • Among 249 hearing aid users, 10.7% never used their devices, and 55.4% used them daily.

  • Hearing aid use decreased with advancing age.
  • Common barriers to use included background noise, feedback, battery costs, and lack of motivation.
  • Conclusions:

    • While hearing aid compliance is improving, occasional or non-use remains a concern in the elderly population.
    • Revising hearing aid fitting and counseling procedures may enhance patient compliance and maximize device benefits.
    • Strategies to improve compliance are discussed for this patient group.
