Summary

Recurrent glomus tumors in two women were successfully treated with sclerotherapy after initial surgery. This vascular tumor treatment offered significant pain relief and excellent long-term cosmetic and functional outcomes.

Background:

  • Glomus tumors are benign, often painful, vascular neoplasms typically arising in the extremities.
  • Recurrence after surgical resection, particularly marginal resection, can occur, necessitating alternative treatment strategies.

Observation:

  • Two female patients, aged 28 and 34, presented with symptomatic recurrent glomus tumors of the hand post-surgery.
  • Pathological examination confirmed the recurrence of glomus tumors despite prior surgical intervention.

Findings:

  • Sclerotherapy, targeting the vascular nature of glomus tumors, was employed as a treatment modality.
  • Patients experienced rapid and dramatic pain relief within days of sclerotherapy.
  • Mean follow-up of 3 years demonstrated highly satisfactory cosmetic and functional results.

Implications:

  • Sclerotherapy presents a viable and effective alternative treatment for recurrent glomus tumors, especially when conservative surgical margins are involved.
  • This minimally invasive approach offers significant benefits in pain management and functional restoration for patients with challenging glomus tumor recurrences.
  • Further research into sclerotherapy protocols for glomus tumors could optimize outcomes and expand its clinical application.
