- Atomic and Molecular Physics
- Spectroscopy
Background:
- The gold dimer anion (Au2(-)) is a molecule of interest in physical chemistry.
- Understanding its electronic structure and properties is crucial for various applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To obtain high-resolution photoelectron spectra of Au2(-).
- To accurately determine spectroscopic constants for the ground states of Au2 and Au2(-).
- To measure the electron affinity of Au2 and the dissociation energy of Au2(-).
Main Methods:
- Utilized a newly built photoelectron imaging apparatus.
- Obtained vibrationally resolved photoelectron images for the ground state detachment transition of Au2(-).
- Employed Franck-Condon simulations for data analysis.
Main Results:
- Achieved a spectral resolution of 3 cm(-1) for low energy electrons.
- Determined accurate spectroscopic constants for Au2 and Au2(-).
- Measured the electron affinity of Au2 as 1.9393 ± 0.0006 eV.
- Obtained a precise dissociation energy for Au2(-) of 1.937 ± 0.005 eV.
Conclusions:
- The high-resolution photoelectron spectra provide valuable insights into the electronic structure of Au2(-).
- The determined spectroscopic constants and energy values are more precise than previously reported.
- This work advances the understanding of gold cluster anions.
