Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between adult height and cognitive impairment in community-dwelling elders in Korea.
  • To explore potential sex differences in the height-cognition relationship.

Main Methods:

  • Study participants were community-dwelling elders aged 65+ from the 2004 Hallym Aging Study.
  • Cognitive function was assessed using the Korean-Mini Mental State Examination.
  • Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the association between height and cognitive function, adjusting for covariates.

Main Results:

  • Elderly men in the shortest height group had a significantly higher risk of cognitive impairment compared to the tallest group (OR, 4.20; 95% CI, 1.02-17.36) after adjusting for age and education.
  • No significant association between height and cognitive impairment was found in elderly women (OR, 1.65; 95% CI, 0.62-4.40).

Conclusions:

  • The observed sex difference in the association between height and cognitive impairment may be attributed to differential effects of education on cognitive function.
  • Larger, population-based prospective cohort studies are recommended to further examine these sex-specific associations.
