Patients with Beta thalassemia minor show impaired coronary microvascular function and arterial health. This study found reduced coronary flow reserve and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, alongside increased carotid intima-media thickness in these patients.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate coronary flow reserve (CFR), brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD), and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in patients with Beta thalassemia minor (BTM).
Main Methods:
- Forty patients with BTM and 35 healthy controls were enrolled.
- Coronary flow reserve, brachial artery FMD, and carotid artery IMT were measured in all participants.
Main Results:
- Beta thalassemia minor patients exhibited significantly lower CFR (2.57 ± 0.46 vs. 3.07 ± 0.48, P < 0.0001).
- Brachial artery FMD was significantly reduced (6.22 ± 4.29% vs. 8.10 ± 4.00%, P = 0.01).
- Carotid IMT was significantly increased (0.57 ± 0.07 vs. 0.54 ± 0.04, P = 0.04).
Conclusions:
- Coronary microvascular function, assessed by CFR, is impaired in BTM patients.
- Brachial artery FMD is decreased, indicating endothelial dysfunction.
- Increased carotid IMT suggests early atherosclerotic changes in BTM.
