Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Medical Device Technology

Background:

  • Intravitreal surgery is challenging in eyes with corneal and lens opacification.
  • Traditional surgical approaches may be limited by poor visualization.
  • Need for advanced endoscopic tools for complex ocular conditions.

Observation:

  • Three types of flexible ophthalmoendoscopes were utilized.
  • Procedures were performed on 23 patients with significant corneal and lens opacification.
  • All surgeries were conducted through the pars plana approach.

Findings:

  • Successful surgical treatment of posterior ocular segment abnormalities was achieved.
  • Flexible ophthalmoendoscopes provided a viable option for previously difficult or impossible intravitreal surgeries.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No intraoperative or postoperative complications were reported in any patient.
  • Implications:

    • Flexible ophthalmoendoscopes represent a significant advancement in treating complex eye conditions.
    • This technology enhances surgical outcomes and patient safety in challenging ophthalmic cases.
    • Potential for wider adoption in managing posterior segment diseases with visual axis opacities.
