Borderline Personality Disorder01:25

Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and impulse control. This instability manifests in extreme emotional reactions, fear of abandonment, and self-destructive behaviors. The disorder significantly impacts daily functioning, often leading to distress in both personal and professional domains.

Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...
Obesity01:24

Obesity

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...
Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...

Pharmacokinetics in Obese Patients: Drug Absorption and Distribution

Obesity significantly alters the pharmacokinetic processes of drug absorption and distribution, presenting unique challenges in medical treatment. The increased fat tissue and decreased lean muscle in obese individuals can significantly affect how drugs are absorbed into the body and distributed across different tissues. This alteration can lead to variances in the effectiveness and safety of medications, necessitating adjustments in dosing or drug selection for obese patients. One notable...
Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Obesity Research

Background:

  • Obesity is a major US health concern requiring understanding of associated clinical factors.
  • Personality disorders may correlate with specific eating pathologies.
  • Impulsive personality disorders, like borderline personality disorder (BPD), are linked to impulsive eating disorders, which are often associated with obesity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and obesity.
  • To synthesize findings from existing studies examining BPD in obese populations.

Main Methods:

  • A review of nine accessible studies involving 639 obese individuals.
  • Analysis of reported prevalence rates of BPD within these studies.

Main Results:

  • Prevalence rates of BPD in obese individuals varied widely (2.2% to 94.1%).
  • Ten out of nineteen measures detected BPD in 25% or more of obese participants.
  • The average BPD prevalence across studies was 26.9%.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support an association between impulsive personality pathology (BPD) and impulsive eating pathology in obese individuals.
  • A significant minority of obese individuals may meet criteria for borderline personality disorder.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the clinical implications of BPD in obesity management.
