Objective:
To investigate the chemical constituents of Fructus Gardeniae.
Methods:
Normal phase silica gel, RP-18 silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies combined with recrystallization were used to isolate and purify the constituents. Their structures were identified by spectroscopic methods, including 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, ESI-MS and EI-MS.
Results:
Seven compounds were isolated. Their structures were identified as geniposide (I), 6alpha-hydroxygeniposide (II), genipin-gentiobioside (III), adian-5-en-3alpha-ol (IV), (23Z) -cycloart-23-en-3beta,25-diol (V), 7alpha-hydroxy sitosterol (VI) and 5,8-epidioxystigmasta-6,22-dien-3-ol (VII) from ethanol extract of Fructus Gardeniae.
Conclusion:
Compounds IV, V, VI and VII are obtained from this plant for the first time.
