Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Context:

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is the most frequent cutaneous mesenchymal neoplasm.
DFSP often presents with delayed diagnosis due to slow growth and subtle symptoms.
This study analyzes the clinical and epidemiological features of DFSP.

Purpose:

To characterize the epidemio-clinical presentation of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.
To review diagnostic and treatment modalities for DFSP.
To assess outcomes and recurrence risks associated with DFSP.

Summary:

Retrospective analysis of 18 DFSP cases diagnosed between 1989 and 2009.
Mean age at diagnosis was 45.2 years, with an average diagnostic delay of 45.7 months.
Tumors were predominantly located on the trunk/back; all confirmed histologically with CD34 positivity in 6 cases. Surgical excision was the universal treatment.
