Assessment of Dependence in Activities of Daily Living Among Older Patients in an Acute Care Unit
Published on: September 30, 2020
[Assessment of a self-destructive patient]
Abstract:
Previous suicide attempt signifies an almost 40-fold suicidal risk. When assessing the danger of suicide the patient should always be asked directly about possible suicidal thoughts or plans. Since most persons having committed or attempted suicide have a psychiatric illness, the diagnosis and treatment of these illnesses are important means to prevent self-destructive behavior. Besides active and intensive therapy, the mediation of hope in all engagements is essential. The mental status of a person having attempted suicide must be assessed, and appropriate follow-up care should be arranged.
