Physical activity guidelines and preschooler's obesity status
1Research Centre in Physical Activity, Health and Leisure (CIAFEL), Faculty of Sports of University of Porto - FADEUP, Porto, Portugal.
Most preschoolers met physical activity guidelines, but low moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was linked to obesity in girls. Further research is needed to confirm these findings on childhood obesity prevention.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Public Health
- Exercise Science
Background:
- Childhood obesity is a growing public health concern.
- Physical activity (PA) is crucial for counteracting obesity in children.
- Understanding PA compliance in preschoolers is vital for targeted interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between adherence to daily PA recommendations and the risk of overweight/obesity in preschool-aged children.
- To analyze compliance rates with different PA guidelines (total PA and moderate-to-vigorous PA).
Main Methods:
- A sample of 607 children aged 4-6 years from Porto, Portugal, was studied.
- Body Mass Index (BMI) was classified using International Obesity Task Force criteria.
- PA was measured over 7 days using accelerometers, assessing total PA (TPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA).
Main Results:
- Overweight and obesity prevalence was 23.5% (girls) and 17.2% (boys).
- High compliance rates were observed: 90.2% of girls and 96.2% of boys met MVPA recommendations; 97.3% of girls and 99.4% of boys met TPA recommendations.
- Not meeting MVPA guidelines was significantly associated with obesity in girls (OR: 3.8), but not in boys.
Conclusions:
- Over 90% of preschoolers met recommended PA guidelines.
- Low levels of MVPA are associated with higher obesity risk specifically in preschool-aged girls.
- Longitudinal studies are recommended to validate these associations and inform childhood obesity prevention strategies.
