Abstract:
Research in the field of pathology is directed to the elucidation of biological pathogenetic mechanisms. A special aim has been to find biomarkers, which would help in predicting the course of the disease and thus support treatment options. Technology, especially the progress in genome analytics, widens pathology as a research field and shifts it from morphological findings to the molecular level. In this way attempts can be made to meet the challenges of personalized medicine. The Finnish healthcare system, including biobanks utilizing archived pathology specimens, will in the near future be able to provide an internationally competitive innovation platform for translational research.
