Summary
A new integrated healthy workplace model was developed and piloted in North Indian industries. This model is feasible for improving industrial worker health and requires further testing nationwide.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Public Health
- Industrial Hygiene
Background:
- Rapid industrialization in India necessitates organized workplace health promotion.
- No existing model caters to the health needs of industrial workers in India.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and implement a healthy workplace model in three North Indian industrial settings.
- To assess the feasibility and refine the model through pilot implementation.
Main Methods:
- Operations research conducted over 12 months in three Chandigarh industries.
- Multi-stakeholder workshops to finalize model components and tools.
- Assessment of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors in 947 employees.
Main Results:
- Formation of healthy workplace committees involving management, labor, and research.
- Development of assessment and monitoring tools for workplace health.
- Prevalence data: 17.8% tobacco use, 47% ever alcoholics, 28% experienced back pain.
- Finalized a three-component healthy workplace model (physical, psychosocial, healthy habits).
Conclusions:
- The integrated healthy workplace model is feasible for North Indian industrial settings.
- Pilot testing demonstrated the model's implementability.
- Further nationwide pilot testing is recommended to promote healthy workplace programs.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I
A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
