Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the peptide toxins within the venom duct of Conus crotchii.
  • To identify novel conopeptides with potential therapeutic applications.

Main Methods:

  • Peptide mass-matching analysis of Conus crotchii venom.
  • Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was employed.
  • Searched approximately 488 molecular masses against the UniProtKB database.

Main Results:

  • Identified 12 conopeptides from Conus crotchii venom.
  • Detected peptides belong to superfamilies A, O1, O2, O3, T, and D.
  • Most identified conopeptides exhibited less than 100% similarity to known sequences, indicating potential novelty.

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified 12 conopeptides from Conus crotchii.
  • These conopeptides target calcium channels, potassium channels, and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.
  • Several newly discovered conopeptides may hold promise as future marine-derived pharmaceuticals.
