Summary

Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue tumor, presents non-specific radiological features. Early diagnosis is crucial, especially in young adults with extremity or chest tumors.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma (EES) is a rare malignant neoplasm.
  • Radiological characteristics of EES are not well-defined, complicating diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the radiological features of extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma.
  • To aid in the differential diagnosis of soft-tissue tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of radiological findings in 22 patients with EES.
  • Analysis of imaging modalities including CT, ultrasound, and MRI.
  • Correlation with pathological findings.

Main Results:

  • Tumors ranged from 2-20 cm, typically well-circumscribed, and lacked calcification.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Low attenuation on CT and hypoechoic appearance on ultrasound were common.
  • No specific enhancement pattern on CT or angiographic features were identified.
  • Tumor hemorrhage was a frequent microscopic finding.
  • Conclusions:

    • Radiological features of EES are non-specific.
    • Consider EES in the differential diagnosis of noncalcified soft-tissue tumors, particularly in young patients and in the extremities or chest.
