Bullying02:04

Bullying

A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is bullying.
Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Summary

The revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire (OBVQ) is not a valid tool for assessing bullying and victimization in children with visual impairment (VI). Further research is needed to develop appropriate psychometric instruments for this population.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Special Education

Background:

  • Bullying and victimization are significant concerns in child development.
  • Children with visual impairment (VI) may face unique challenges related to social interaction and bullying.
  • The Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire (OBVQ) is a widely used tool, but its psychometric properties in diverse populations require validation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of the revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire (OBVQ) in Indian children with visual impairment (VI).
  • To assess the validity and reliability of the OBVQ for measuring bullying and victimization in children with VI using Rasch analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Administered the revised 40-item OBVQ to 150 Indian children with VI (ages 8-16).
  • Conducted Rasch analysis on 16 items (8 for victimization, 8 for bullying others).
  • Investigated rating scale function, unidimensionality, measurement precision (Person Separation Reliability - PSR), and item targeting.

Main Results:

  • Response categories required repair due to misuse in both victimization and bullying subscales.
  • Measurement precision was inadequate for both subscales (PSR: 0.64 for victimization, 0.19 for bullying others), indicating poor discrimination.
  • Item targeting was adequate for victimization (-0.58 logits) but suboptimal for bullying others (-1.97 logits).

Conclusions:

  • The revised OBVQ, in its current form, lacks the psychometric validity to accurately assess victimization and bullying among children with VI.
  • The findings highlight the need for culturally adapted and psychometrically sound instruments for this population.
  • Further development and validation are necessary before the OBVQ can be reliably used with children with VI.
