Dermatologists helped to develop the specialty of liposuction surgery and contributed to many of the innovations and instrumentation in this field. Dermatologists were trained side by side with other cosmetic surgeons as the procedure was introduced into the United States. Dermatologists have been important in teaching liposuction with the American Society of Liposuction Surgery and have been in the forefront of this developing new area of cosmetic surgery.
