[Periodontology and geriatric population]

The prevalence, development, prevention and therapy of gingivitis and periodontitis in older people are discussed. The tissue destructive process is slower in older than in younger people, and the prognoses in correctly treated cases is good. The therapy follows conventional guidelines. Preventive treatment will, however, often be a compromise with lesser plaque controls because of the patients' failing conditions. Generally a more conservative therapy without any surgery is chosen. After treatment the patients must be kept under surveillance with regular check ups, remotivation and professional tooth cleaning.
