cAMP-dependent Protein Kinase Pathways01:25

cAMP-dependent Protein Kinase Pathways

Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate (cAMP) is an essential second messenger that activates protein kinase A (PKA) and regulates various biological processes. A single epinephrine molecule binds to GPCR and activates several heterotrimeric G proteins, each stimulating multiple adenylyl cyclase, amplifying the signal, and synthesizing large numbers of cAMP molecules. Small changes in cAMP concentration affect PKA activity. The binding of four cAMP molecules induces a conformational change in PKA,...
Colonisation of Pathogens01:25

Colonisation of Pathogens

Pathogen colonization of host tissues is a critical step in the development of infectious diseases. Various pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa, have evolved complex strategies to attach to, invade, and persist within host environments. These mechanisms enable pathogens to establish infections, evade immune responses, and resist antimicrobial treatments.Attachment to Host CellsIn bacteria, colonization typically begins with adherence to host epithelial...
Chemotaxis in E. coli01:27

Chemotaxis in E. coli

Chemotaxis in Escherichia coli is a sensory-driven motility mechanism that enables bacteria to navigate chemical gradients, moving toward beneficial environments while avoiding harmful conditions. This process relies on a signal transduction system integrating external chemical cues with flagellar motor control.Chemoreceptors and Signal DetectionE. coli detects chemical gradients through methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs), which are membrane-bound chemoreceptors that sense attractants...
Gastritis II: Pathophysiology01:26

Gastritis II: Pathophysiology

The pathophysiology of gastritis begins with the colonization of the stomach lining by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This bacterium spreads mainly via the oral-oral route through saliva or shared utensils, and can also be transmitted in overcrowded or unhygienic environments through contaminated water, despite its brief survival outside the body.ColonizationOnce ingested, H. pylori enters the stomach and begins colonization by navigating through the mucus layer lining the stomach wall. It...

Summary

Campylobacter concisus activates neutrophils, crucial for inflammation. However, patient serum showed a weak IgG response, indicating limited systemic immunity against this emerging enteric pathogen.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Campylobacter concisus is an emerging enteric pathogen linked to prolonged diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Its interaction with the innate immune system and systemic immunoglobulin response during acute infection remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the activation of neutrophils by C. concisus.
  • To assess the systemic immunoglobulin response in C. concisus infections.

Main Methods:

  • Neutrophils from healthy volunteers were activated with C. concisus isolates.
  • Neutrophil adherence molecule CD11b expression and oxidative burst response were measured.
  • Opsonic activity was assessed using heat-treated serum from patients and healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • All C. concisus isolates strongly activated neutrophils, increasing CD11b expression and oxidative burst.
  • Opsonization in heat-treated serum enhanced the chemiluminescence response.
  • Serum from C. concisus-infected patients showed no higher opsonic activity than control serum.

Conclusions:

  • C. concisus effectively activates innate immunity via neutrophils, crucial for acute inflammation.
  • The findings suggest a weak systemic IgG response to C. concisus infection.
