Summary

This study presents a compact, low-power plasma ion source using a glow discharge for ion extraction. The design is a proof of concept for small cylindrical ion traps.

To assess the feasibility for applications in small cylindrical ion traps.

Main Methods:

Constructed a glow discharge ion source with three electrodes (two for discharge, one mesh for extraction) in a MACOR chamber.
Utilized small stainless steel screws as electrodes in a linear configuration.
Operated the source within a pressure range of 50-100 mTorr.
Developed a low-power circuit to drive the high-voltage pulsed discharge.
