Summary

This case report details a rare instance of extensive calcium deposition in the skin of a systemic lupus erythematosus patient, forming large, hard tumors. This finding highlights an unusual manifestation of cutaneous calcification in autoimmune disease.

Background:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with diverse clinical manifestations.
  • Cutaneous manifestations are common in SLE, but extensive subcutaneous calcification forming large tumors is rare.

Observation:

  • A 42-year-old woman with a history of SLE since 1986 developed a subcutaneous nodule on her leg.
  • The nodule progressively enlarged, and multiple new nodules appeared, some coalescing into large, flat, platelike tumors.

Findings:

  • Radiographic and histological examinations confirmed the tumors were composed of calcium deposits.
  • This represents the first reported case of very large, hard tumors caused by cutaneous calcium deposition in a patient with SLE.
