Background:

  • Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic used for treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
  • While white blood cell (WBC) changes are a known side effect, platelet count alterations are less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in platelet counts among patients undergoing clozapine treatment for various psychiatric conditions.
  • To determine if clozapine therapy is associated with significant alterations in platelet levels.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 43 psychiatric patients treated with clozapine.
  • Platelet counts were assessed using morning venous blood samples.
  • Correlation analysis was performed between clozapine dosage and platelet counts.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant change in overall platelet counts was observed during clozapine treatment (p>0.05).
  • 17.9% of patients experienced at least one instance of thrombocytopenia (platelet count < 180,000/mm³).
  • 17.9% of patients had at least one instance of thrombocytosis (platelet count > 400,000/mm³).

Conclusions:

  • Platelet count variations should be considered alongside white blood cell changes in patients using clozapine.
  • Clinicians should monitor for and be aware of significant deviations in platelet counts during clozapine therapy.
