Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Summary

The Spanner temporary prostatic stent is easy to insert, but removal is challenging. Most Spanner stent removals required endoscopic procedures due to difficulties with the retrieval suture.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Bladder outflow obstruction and urinary retention are common conditions requiring intervention.
  • Temporary prostatic stents offer a potential solution for managing these conditions while awaiting definitive treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the ease of insertion and removal of the Spanner temporary prostatic stent.
  • To assess the utility of the Surveyor prostatic urethral measuring device in conjunction with the Spanner stent.

Main Methods:

  • 16 patients with bladder outflow obstruction or retention underwent Spanner stent insertion after Surveyor measurement.
  • Data on insertion, voiding, complications, and stent dwell time were collected.
  • Stent removal methods and reasons for premature removal were recorded.

Main Results:

  • All Spanner stent insertions were uncomplicated.
  • 14 patients voided satisfactorily post-insertion (mean Qmax 15.0 ml/s, PVR 51.3 ml).
  • 12 out of 16 stents required endoscopic removal due to symptoms, retention, or migration, indicating removal difficulties.

Conclusions:

  • The Spanner stent demonstrates ease of insertion.
  • Difficulties with the retrieval suture frequently necessitate endoscopic removal, highlighting a significant drawback.
  • Potential design modifications are suggested to improve stent retrieval and reduce complications.
