Summary

Minimally invasive anatomical segmentectomies using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) are safe and effective for early-stage lung cancer. These procedures offer good outcomes for select patients, preserving lung function and providing aesthetic results.

Background:

  • Minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer is increasingly adopted globally.
  • Anatomical segmentectomy, a complex procedure involving sub-lobar dissection, is gaining traction.

Observation:

  • Two clinical cases of patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic anatomical segmentectomies are presented.
  • Case 1: A 63-year-old woman with a lingular nodule diagnosed as carcinoid tumor (pT1aN0).
  • Case 2: A 50-year-old woman with a ground glass opacity in the left lower lobe diagnosed as adenocarcinoma (pT1a N0).

Findings:

  • Both patients underwent successful anatomical segmentectomy with lymphadenectomy via VATS.
  • Post-operative follow-up showed no signs of recurrence in either patient.
  • Both patients achieved good aesthetic results from their surgical incisions.

Implications:

  • Anatomical segmentectomy is a viable surgical option for early-stage lung cancers, low-grade tumors, and patients with limited pulmonary function.
  • VATS anatomical segmentectomy can be performed safely, offering a minimally invasive approach with positive oncological and aesthetic outcomes.
