Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Summary

This is the first reported case of histiocytic sarcoma in a rabbit, a rare cancer presenting as a pulmonary mass with respiratory signs. Early diagnosis is crucial for potential treatment of this aggressive neoplasia.

Background:

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of myeloid origin.
Pulmonary masses in rabbits are uncommon and require thorough investigation.
This report details a unique case in a Dutch rabbit.

Observation:

An 8-year-old rabbit presented with sneezing, tachypnea, and anorexia.
Physical examination revealed tachypnea and pale mucous membranes.
Thoracic radiographs showed a pulmonary mass.

Findings:

Fine-needle aspirates and histopathology confirmed histiocytic sarcoma.
Histologic features included clusters of histiocytic and multinucleated giant cells.
Vascular and lymphatic invasion were noted, indicating aggressive behavior.

Implications:

Histiocytic sarcoma should be considered in rabbits with respiratory signs and pulmonary masses.
This case highlights the importance of diagnostic imaging and biopsy for accurate diagnosis.
Further research is needed to understand the prevalence and treatment of histiocytic sarcoma in rabbits.
