Summary

Large fluid volumes, autoclaved containers, rubber tubing, and rapid infusion rates significantly increase the risk of thrombophlebitis (vein inflammation). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common pathogen found.

Background:

  • Thrombophlebitis, an inflammation of veins, is a common complication following venepuncture and intravenous (IV) infusions.

  • To analyze the incidence and risk factors associated with thrombophlebitis in adult patients.
  • To determine the relationship between IV fluid administration parameters and the development of thrombophlebitis.
