Amyloid fibrils are aggregates of misfolded proteins.  Under most circumstances, misfolded proteins are either refolded by chaperone proteins or degraded by the proteasome. Primary localized laryngeal amyloidosis is rare. Surgical treatment of this condition in a 42-year-old woman significantly improved hoarseness and breathing difficulties.

  • Histopathological examination of a biopsy confirmed amyloid deposition in the larynx.
  • No systemic disease was detected.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with primary localized laryngeal amyloidosis.
  • Surgical intervention using microlaryngoscopy under general anesthesia was performed.
  • Post-surgery, significant improvement in voice and respiration was observed.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the successful surgical management of primary localized laryngeal amyloidosis.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical treatment can lead to substantial recovery of laryngeal function.
