  • To assess bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) in Black children aged 18-47 months.
  • To investigate the relationship between blood lead levels and bone mineralization in this population.
  • To establish preliminary normative data for BMC in Black children.

Main Methods:

  • Single photon absorptiometry of the radius shaft was used to measure BMD and BMC.
  • Fifty-nine Black children aged 18-47 months with varying blood lead levels were studied.

    • The bone mineral content (BMC) of the studied Black children was significantly higher than published values for white children.
    • Moderate elevations in blood lead levels were not found to significantly influence bone mineralization.

    Conclusions:

    • Black children in this age group may have inherently higher bone mineral content compared to white children.
    • Moderate lead exposure does not appear to negatively impact bone mineralization in young Black children.
    • Further research is needed to establish comprehensive normative data for pediatric bone health in diverse populations.
