Summary

Head trauma may slightly increase the risk of developing celiac disease (CD). This study found a small excess risk for future CD in individuals with a history of head trauma.

Background:

  • Transglutaminase 6 (TG6) is linked to neurological issues in celiac disease (CD).
  • Head trauma may precede CD, potentially via TG6 and TG2 interactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if head trauma increases the risk of developing celiac disease (CD).

Main Methods:

  • A Swedish population-based study analyzed biopsy reports from 29,096 individuals with CD and 144,522 controls.
  • Conditional logistic regression calculated odds ratios (ORs) for head trauma in CD patients versus controls.

Main Results:

  • Individuals with head trauma had a 1.10-fold increased risk of future CD (95% CI = 1.02-1.17).
  • The highest risk was observed within the first year post-trauma, irrespective of trauma severity, sex, or age at CD diagnosis.

Conclusions:

  • An earlier head trauma is associated with a very small excess risk of developing celiac disease (CD).
